Cats and dogs

I bought my first true Australian souvenir today - an umbrella from the local drugstore! The cashier assured me that it never rains like this but even still, my umbrella comes with a one year warranty. Just in case. He looked like he could be Bernard's cousin, for those of you who know the guy who teaches French at HC.

I embarked on a remarkably soggy tour of The Rocks. We're not talking drizzle here, friends. It was the rain that blows sideways and turns into sheets on the road. A perfect day to see the sights - ha! I'm considering it training for New Zealand, perhaps.

The tour was fantastic until one girl slipped and pretty much broke her leg. And it's her honeymoon.

Anywho, before that dramatic moment, I learned plenty about The Rocks, namely that it's here because of convicts. The guide had great stories. Interesting to note, the only buildings in this area that haven't been converted into galleries and cafes and are still used for their original purpose are pubs and churches. Two necessities, I suppose.

This monument has three sides that showcase three groups that played a role in The Rocks' history: the soldier, the convict and families. Here's the convict side - the best one!

Lunch needed to be warm and delish. Success, it was both!  Spicy lamb and chickpea stew with tahini yogurt and sourdough toast. There. Are. No. Words. Washed it down with a flat white. I'm becoming an addict.

I had a brief break from the rain during the tour of the Opera House. What an incredible place! Photos don't do it justice, but here's a taste.

The story behind the design competition for the building was new to me. If you're unfamiliar, it's worth a Google. Adds another element of "no way!" when you know how the Opera House came to look how it does.

I made it back to the hotel and wrung out all my clothing (I'm not speaking figuratively...) and warmed up. I had a quick text exchange with Lace and rallied. Couldn't let the downpours stop the evening plans.

The rain momentarily let up so I quickly got myself looking presentable and headed to The Owl House for dinner.   It was my first experience as a solo diner at a nicer spot... and an evening I won't soon forget. I met some lovely people and spent the evening learning all about Sydney from the owner, who was born in Israel, grew up in New York City and opened his spot in Darlinghurst. The food was incredible, drinks were so different and the company was exactly what I needed.

Sorry for poor photo quality - no flash, dim place.

Tomorrow's agenda includes, guess what?  MORE RAIN. Is this weather for real?  This may require some creativity in planning the day.  I have some indoor ideas in my back pocket.
